HUMANE Seminar in Edinburgh 22 - 23 September

Dear HUMANE Member,

A few weeks ago I gave advanced notice that Gerry Webber will be hosting our next HUMANE Seminar at the Edinburgh Napier University on Thursday 22 to Friday 23 September (note Thursday to Friday format). The theme will be Structures. I now have the pleasure to announce the following speakers:

Keynote Session: University structures: should form follow function?
John Hogan, Registrar, Newcastle University (UK)

University structures: past, present and future Harry Fekkers, Counselor for Research and Innovation, Universiteit Maastricht (NL)

Restoring good governance at an institution in crisis Peter West, Former Secretary to the University, University of Strathclyde (UK)

The impact of the Finnish New University Act Antti Savolainen, Director of Administrative Services, University of Helsinki (FI)

Restructuring Higher Education: a view from the Netherlands Mieke Zaanen, Secretary General, Universiteit van Amsterdam (NL)

Shared services: new structures and barriers to change Nigel Paul, Director of Corporate Services, University of Edinburgh (UK)

Gerry writes:

Most universities in our HUMANE membership have, over the past decade, embarked on restructuring - whether of academic, administrative and support structures, financial restructuring, or governance arrangements. Some of this has been driven by individual universities themselves, some as a result of external stimuli from, for example, Government or Government agencies, or voluntary or other type of amalgamations.

How effective has this activity been in making our institutions more effective academically, more efficient administratively or more competitive?

Is further restructuring inevitable as a result of the current economic slow-down? Will this be driven by governments, and if so, will governments, in effect, dictate or force further change to our structures?

Who can attend?

- HUMANE Members.
- HUMANE Members can attend with a senior expert from their institution.
- HUMANE Members can nominate a senior expert to attend without the HUMANE Member, but the HUMANE Member must approve the registration.
