HUMANE Seminar in Bologna, Friday 9 to Saturday 10 November - Speakers Announced -
Our last HUMANE Seminar of the year will be hosted by the University of Bologna and is on the topic Multi-Campus Universities - Challenges and Opportunities. We are very happy to announce the speakers below.
The development of universities varies in European history. First, universities or colleges were established in monasteries. Later, kings and princes founded universities in their territories. All these institutions were located on a campus or in one building. Modern universities were often founded by towns and cities and they often were scattered in buildings throughout the whole city.
Over the last 30 years - after a period of setting up a lot of institutions of Higher Education we can see a new trend: The partition of universities and merging of different institutions to new universities . Some examples:
- The separation of the Parisian University into the independent institutions (i.e. Paris I to XII) after the French student protests in the 1960s.
- In Germany Teacher Training Institutes were integrated into Universities and later universities were merged to a new Institution like for example the University of Duisburg-Essen.
- More and more universities establish departments and campuses in other countries and overseas.
These developments led to the creation of the Multi Campus University.
Today, we find them in many European countries in very different forms. Due to the fact that some are spread over a large area or have faculties and research areas in several cities, universities face - in particular - a great challenge, both in terms of managing and logistics.
In the Bologna Seminar we will discuss challenges and opportunities of this development and introduce more and less successful and difficult examples from several European countries.
