HUMANE - EFMD Information - EFMD announce two training programmes

Our strategic partner EFMD has announced the following two training programmes:

EFMD-EURAM Research Leadership Programme - Cycle 6
Brussels, Belgium - three modules during 2016

After five successful editions and over 75 participants, the Research Leadership Programme (RLP) will run again in 2016 on the following dates:

  • Module 1: 22-24 February 2016
  • Module 2: 31 March - 1 April 2016
  • Module 3: 13-14 September 2016

Universities and business schools contribute to significant knowledge creation. However, each institution is faced with the challenges to develop an appropriate research strategy and to implement it.   In order to strengthen their members’ capability to develop high quality research, EFMD and EURAM have joined efforts to offer this professional development programme.
The aim of the programme is to introduce new and existing Directors of Research in Management in universities and Business Schools to best practice in their position. Participants will get direct advice from experienced Directors, access to the gatekeepers of research funding institutions and benefit from the support of an alumni network.

EFMD-GMAC Admissions institute for New Professionals Europe (AINP Programme)
Brussels, Belgium - 8 to 11 February 2016

AINP (Admission Professionals) is one of the first developments in EFMD’s activity in targeting the professionals. The Graduate Management Admission Council has worked for over 60 years with graduate Admissions professionals from around the world. The partnership with EFMD combines the expertise, networks and knowledge of two of the industry’s leading bodies to deliver a robust program essential for every new professional in admissions.
The programme is built as an executive education experience along 3 days that combines different learning methods including lectures, cases, group discussions, workshops, and individual contribution. By attending it, the new professionals become more effective in their Admissions practice, gain perspective and understand the current Graduate Management Education (GME) landscape, become skilled in answering ranking related questions and overall, they maximize the outreach efforts. The size of the group limited to 25 participants in order to guarantee a highly impactful learning experience.

HUMANE Study Trip Cardiff University, Tuesday 20th to Friday 23rd October 2015 - Towards a Global University: Change and Challenge

Following a number of successful Study Trips  to universities in Scandinavia, the Netherlands,  Switzerland and England, we are pleased to provide details of the next Trip, in May this year, to Cardiff University, in Wales.  

Cardiff University is one of the UKs Russell Group of research intensive universities, with an ambitious global strategy, highly rated research, an international staff and student community .  As the leading university in Wales, based in the capital city, it also has a significant regional role.

The Trip will focus on the University’s ambitions to be consistently among the top 100 universities in the world, while, as importantly, being an international university that is of benefit to Wales, forms the theme of this Study Trip.  The University’s strategic direction, and the ambitious investment programme and structural changes which support that strategy, will be the starting point for our discussions.  Presentations will focus on the University’s vision, an assessment of what has been achieved so far and how best to structure the future realisation of the ambition. There will also be a particular focus on how Professional Services can support and sustain this global vision.

A detailed programme and further information is available from the links below.   This promises to be an interesting visit to a successful and ambitious university which has undergone significant change, and should be of interest to a wide range of colleagues.  Heads of Administration may want to attend personally, with a group of colleagues, or send colleagues who they think might benefit from the trip, both in terms of the content of the programme and the opportunities for networking. We would also like you to make sure that every participant is able to understand the English presentations and participate in the discussions, which will also be in English.

Cardiff is a cosmopolitan and vibrant capital city with excellent transport links.  The Cardiff/Wales airport is nearby and the city has a main line railway station with direct (two hour) links to London, and to Bristol and other parts of the UK. The city boasts a range of historic buildings including a castle and the National Museum of Wales as well as the modern Millennium Stadium which plays host to international rugby and football matches. The iconic television programme Doctor Who is filmed on location in Cardiff, often using University buildings, and there is a permanent Doctor Who exhibition centre in Cardiff Bay.

Programme Outline
The strategy and objectives of Cardiff University will be presented in the context of being in the capital city of a devolved nation of the UK.  Group sessions and group work will focus on: 
  • The strategy of Cardiff University to become a world-leading university that fulfils its obligations to Cardiff, Wales and the world
  • How this strategy is best realised and the likely indicators of success
  • The role of Professional Services (administration) in achieving the University’s ambition
  • The role of the Cardiff Innovation System in delivering the global and local vision

Registration Information
The fee for the study trip is € 1,900 per participant for HUMANE Member universities. The fee for representatives of non-member universities is € 2,250.  The fee includes all meals (lunches and dinners) indicated in the programme but not travel and accommodation.

We had to disappoint some subscribers on previous occasions so we strongly advise you to register as soon as possible. Due to the limited spaces on the Study Trip your registration will be binding. If you cancel your registration before 20 September 2015 we will reimburse 75% of the fee. No reimbursement can be made after that date.

IMPORTANT - The number of participants will be limited (approximately 21 per trip). Please wait for confirmation of your registration before making any travel arrangements.

We believe that these visits will be of great benefit and will add greatly to the services we offer our members. HUMANE will carefully evaluate these visits for their effectiveness and relevance.

EFMD-HUMANE Winter School for Senior Managers 2016 Edition Barcelona 6-11 March 2016 - Open for Applications

An exciting opportunity to gain new leadership and management skills
 

For the 14th Edition of the Winter School, the programme will include in-depth study of contrasting approaches being taken across Europe to internationalise and implement strategies for globalisation by higher education institutions. 

Informed by leading experts in their field, we will look at the implications of such approaches for the professional and administrative services in HE; through practical group work participants will hone their leadership and management skills and better understand how to support transformation and change in their own institutions.

Work on the case studies will take place throughout the week.  Participants will appraise the internationalisation strategies being adopted by the case study institutions and share experiences from their own universities.  You will learn to assess both strategy formulation and execution, looking at the range of options that institutions can choose to reach organisational goals, assessing opportunities, challenges and institutional risks.

Your applicants will gain competence in exercising leadership, working across institutions in a multi-professional context to build collective support for A selected course of action.   Core aspects of institutional management will be considered: strategy, performance, finance, marketing and communication and people, all equally critical for strategic implementation.

With leading experts in internationalisation and two successful examples of university internationalisation strategies (Nottingham University and Maastricht University), the 2016 Winter School will provide exciting opportunities to gain in-depth knowledge and experience to shape the future HE agenda.

The Winter School targets fast-rising senior university managers with real potential for future leadership and the capacity to become influential senior managers. The School is particularly valuable for managers whose careers have been in “specialist” areas and who might benefit from exposure to broader ideas. Applicants are nominated by their own heads of administration or their deans, and selected by an EFMD-HUMANE panel with wide experience of leadership management development programmes.

HUMANE Seminar Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol Friday 20 to Saturday 21 November, 2015 - Enhancing Research and Innovation in Universities
HUMANE is pleased to announce our next Seminar Enhancing Research and Innovation in Universities.

In this Seminar we will look at different approaches to support research and innovation in universities. The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) will offer a unique setting to explore how young universities can build strong research and innovation agendas.  The following topics will be explored:

- How do universities transform their professional services to support new developments in research and innovation
- What are the implications of cross-organisational/cross-sectoral partnerships (e.g. universities working with industry) for university management
- What are the successful examples of regional engagement between multiple and diverse players
- What are the financial challenges for universities
- What are the consequences on the management of human resources
- New strategy engagement with the external environment

Participants will have ample opportunities to exchange ideas with the speakers and with colleagues, reflecting on their own situation.

Quality Management

Quality Management Definition: ‘a system by which an organisation aims to reduce and eventually eliminate nonconformance to specifications, standards and customer expectations in the most cost effective and efficient manner’ Is this definition taken from the “business dictionary” valid in all its forms for HEIs? 

Quality management as a means to ensure the quality of training and research has existed in North America and British institutions for some time. In France it has existed for training in Engineering since the 1930s. It is obvious that early development of quality management as a condition for accreditation is closely linked to vocational training and the link with the professional world where there is a ready capacity to set up relevant specifications and standards. 

The Bologna declaration is best known for the ECTS system it created that allows student mobility between different countries: one tends to forget that mutual recognition relies on trust based on common standards verified by quality management procedures and common quality assurance standards and guidelines. 

It has created a drive toward accreditation and common quality assurance standards that aims to improve the reliability of the overall system. 

But whereas the business schools are submitted to common standards through common quality management standards verified by institutions that boast international recognition and as a consequence are directly comparable, other institutions with a wider range of academic disciplines lack a common accreditation process that would allow more direct comparisons by students as well as other stakeholders. 

HEI’s are closely linked to a country’s identity: in this framework the question of who sets the standards and specifications is crucial and subject to continuous debate even in those areas such as engineering where professional bodies have helped to legitimate common standards. On the other hand there is virtually no experience of this at national or international levels, and perhaps even active resistance, in subject areas such as humanities or pure mathematics. 

That is why today ENQA compares and accredits national accreditation systems, it doesn’t allow for direct comparisons between institutions. This means that at national levels quality management and accreditation systems are often a means to ensure that minimum standards are respected by institutions that rely heavily on public money. 

At the international level league table rankings, even though their methodologies are the subject of intense criticism, have become proxy indicators of “quality” and sources of inter-institutional comparison. There is good evidence to suggest that they have become a crucial determinant of international student choice. 

Through the experience of a variety of speakers we’ll debate these issues and questions.
