HUMANE Seminar: The leadership of people, knowledge and change - Frascati, Rome April 7-8 - now open for registration - Secure Your Place!

HUMANE Seminar
University of Rome Tor Vergata
Friday 7 to Saturday 8 April, 2017

The leadership of people, knowledge and change: the contribution of ‘the administration’ to institutional sustainability

Registration is now open!

As featured in our latest eNewsletter the first HUMANE Seminar of 2017 will be hosted by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and will take place at the beautiful 16th century Villa Mondragone located in the hills of Rome in Frascati. Don't miss out on this excellent opportunity - register now

As higher education institutions seek to adapt during turbulent times, the narrative surrounding the contribution the so called ‘administration’ makes to institutional sustainability has undergone dramatic change

Whereas once the focus was a one-dimensional lens on cost and value-for-money, institutions increasingly adopt a multi-dimensional focus on customer or client satisfaction, quality of outcomes, effectiveness and true economic efficiency, in shaping the future focus of their student, teaching and research support operations.

Nor are these new approaches to HE administrative support and institutional sustainability solely underpinned by purely technical interventions, important as process re-engineering, organisational structuring and technology are; contemporary approaches to leadership, talent development and acquisition, and cross-functional team work are now central features of many institutions’ administrative reform agendas.

Our seminar brings together an impressive array of speakers with first hand experience of leading and managing change in their institutions to affect this seismic shift from passive, reactive support services to future focused, pro-active, well led professional services, actively contributing to their institutions’ future sustainability as vibrant intellectual communities of students and staff.

Speakers and Themes (subject to change):

Prof. Michele Bugliesi, Rector, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (IT)
- Internationalisation strategy and institutional sustainability: choices and challenges at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

drs. Dries Berendsen, Director Real Estates and Campus, Utrecht University (NL) with Ove Botnevik, Director of Estates and Facilities Management, University of Bergen (NO)
- Leadership and change in achieving space efficiency at Utrecht University: a case study

Dr. Enrico Lodolo, Director of IT, University of Bologna (IT)
- The digital revolution comes to Europe's oldest university: digitisation strategy and sustainability at the University of Bologna

Mag. Joachim Ninaus, Director Central Services, University of Music and Performing Arts, Graz (AT)
- The Sustainable Universities Programme initiative Austria

Prof. Stefano Cordiner, Director of Energy Management, University of Rome Tor Vergata (IT)
- Leadership and change for energy efficiency at the University of Rome Tor Vergata: or, how I got a university to love a sustainable environment policy

John Worne, COO Arts and Sciences Faculties, King's College London (UK)

Main Seminar
Keynote Speakers

According to the Economist, the global tertiary-enrolment ratio – the share of the student-age population at university – went up from 14% to 32% in the two decades to 2012; in that time, the number of countries with a ratio of more than half rose from five to 54. University enrolment is growing faster even than demand for that ultimate consumer good, the car.

However, both market-based and state funding models of satisfying this burgeoning demand have had mixed success at best in getting under-represented groups into higher education. And even when they do, the attainment gap between higher and lower socio-economic groups is still significant, despite a generation of social inclusion policies.

An impressive group of keynote speakers will help us to take on these big issues, including:

Prof. Bertrand Monthubert President, Campus France (FR) Reading the Currents: the outlook for HE access and attainment in France

Baroness Alison Wolf Professor of Public Sector Management, King's College London (UK) A Bleak Future? Universal tertiary education, and what happens if we get it wrong

Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke Former UK Education and Home Secretary (UK) The Political Economy of Higher Education Financing Policy

Prof. Les Ebdon Director of the Office for Fair Access to Higher Education (UK) Why universities should do more to promote social mobility

Dr. Michael Harms Director of Communications, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (DE) No Fees, No Problem? Access to and affordability of German Higher Education

Alexandra Rosenbach Chief Strategy Advisor Internationalisation, Maastricht University (NL) Money Talks: access, affordability and attainment in Dutch Higher Education: creating an inspiring and diverse international classroom at Maastricht University

With additional presentations from:

Prof. Bo-Anders Jönsson - Pro-Dean, University of Lund (SE) - Recent developments in higher education access and educational attainment policy in Sweden: a University of Lund perspective

Andy Moss - Senior Vice President, Pearson Education (UK) - Transforming educational attainment: innovations and developments in the for profit HE sector

Nadine Almanasfi and Aaron Porter - Post-graduate student and former student president, and former National Union of Students President (UK) - A student representative’s perspective of the access and attainment agenda and what the future holds

Doreen Thompson, Billy Reed and KCL students - Widening Participation Unit, King’s College London (UK) - Widening Participation and social inclusion strategy at King’s College London

EFMD-HUMANE 2017 Winter School for Senior Managers - information

EFMD-HUMANE Winter School for Senior Managers

2017 Edition
Barcelona, 19-24 March 2017

Information

Context

Throughout Europe, and despite apparent differences between national systems, senior managers in higher education have to deal with very similar issues. The increasing impact of international initiatives reinforce this common interest. The top managers of tomorrow will be those who understand the global environment and can capitalise on opportunities for development.

Aims

The EFMD (ESMU) - HUMANE Winter School develops the leadership potential of talented Senior Managers by making them fully aware of the concepts and practices of strategic management in a European context, and the importance of integrating academic matters, finances, human resources, governance, leadership and communication strategy in the elaboration of university strategy.

Format

The programme is highly intensive, including plenary sessions and practical work in small groups. Participants are encouraged to discuss the situation of their own institutions. The working language is English, but presenters are well used to dealing with various levels of language proficiency.

Subject matter

The Winter School focuses on leadership skills and the “big picture” of management (how to identify and implement necessary changes). However, the context of university life and the developing scene across Europe provide a unifying thread – this is not just “yet another” management course.

Participants gain experience in making informed choices in decision-making processes. The Winter School uses the experience of EFMD and HUMANE members to give unique first-hand insight into general problems. The geographical and cultural spread of our members ensure that this discussion is not system-specific.

Applicants

The Winter School is designed for talented fast-rising managers of administration or services, some of who might become heads of administration. The typical candidate will be someone who has the potential to become an influential senior manager and/or head of administration in the future but who at this moment may not be a deputy or senior colleague. Candidates may be an expert or a specialist with the potential to broaden responsibility and move in due course to a senior management position. They are nominated by their own heads of administration, and selected by the School Steering Committee.

Application criteria

The Winter School is designed for talented managers of administration or services, some of whom might become heads of administration in the future.

Applicants must during the application process provide:

  • A one page statement describing your qualifications and why you are interested in this Winter School
  • A one (or maximum two) page curriculum vitae
  • A letter of support from your head of administration

The website for applications will be open from the end of August 2016.

The number of participants is limited to 40. Applicants will know whether their application has been successful or not in the beginning of December 2016.

Funding Opportunities

  • Two scholarships available!
EFMD and HUMANE are pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships for outstanding individuals to attend the 2017 edition of the Winter School of Senior Managers from universities and business schools.
The two scholarships are of the amount of 1.500€ and come as a reduction of the Winter School fees (€ 3,625 ). They are available for applicants from EFMD and HUMANE member institutions. (More information coming soon)
  • Universities and Business Schools may also wish to explore travel funding opportunities from the EU for training activities (for more information, please check the Erasmus + Programme guide)

Applications can be made until 31 October 2016.

The programme will be available shortly on the website.
