HUMANE - EUA Information - EUA announces 3rd Funding Forum

EUA Announces its 3rd Funding Forum
University of Porto, Portugal, 6-7 October 2016

Building on the success of the previous editions, EUA is pleased to invite you to the 3rd EUA Funding Forum, hosted by the University of Porto, Portugal, on 6 and 7 October 2016.

A biennial event, which has become the true highlight of the European university funding scene, the Funding Forum is a unique, inclusive platform open to all higher education funding stakeholders – university leaders and managers, researchers, students, public authorities, public and private funders and partners. This year’s Forum will focus on the crucial issues of delivering value to society and efficient university management, as well as key conditions that enable universities to fulfil their missions in an effective way.

At a time when public finances are under increased pressure, funding models for universities are being revised with the perspective of optimising expenditure and generating greater added value while increasing the efficiency of the sector. In many European countries, it is becoming highly relevant for the university sector to show and quantify its contribution to society, in social but also economic terms.

Designed against this backdrop, the Forum will take stock and help shape the future of the higher education funding agenda at the regional, national and European level. It will invite participants to discuss the following questions:

  • Which policies and strategies can help universities to efficiently fulfil their missions?
  • How can the contribution of universities to society be assessed, let alone measured?
  • Should universities communicate on their economic added value? And if so, how?
  • What are the expectations of funders and policy makers? How can stakeholders develop a productive dialogue at system level?
  • What are the latest trends and the future of European funding?
  • How can universities explore new partnerships and diversify their funding streams?

The Forum provides a unique opportunity for peer learning and the exchange of the latest scientific and practical knowledge on how to foster and make the contribution of universities to society and the economy more visible.

Programme
The preliminary programme, including session descriptions and further information are now available on the Funding Forum website.

HUMANE Annual Conference: Global University Rankings and Institutional Strategic Positioning - Groningen, The Netherlands, 17-18 June

HUMANE Annual Conference
University of Groningen (NL)
Friday 17 to Saturday 18 June, 2016

Global University Rankings and Institutional
Strategic Positioning

Virtually no executive team in a contemporary multi-faculty university can ignore the publication of national and global rankings.

One way or another, these ranking publications affect student demand and recruitment, the perceptions of staff candidates during the recruitment process, institution-to-institution networks and alliances, and universities' general reputation.

At best, a good performance in rankings can contribute to an ambitious institutional zeitgeist, or at the very least have a positive impact on staff, student and alumni morale.

But crafting an institutional strategy with an over-focus on improving performance in rankings is fraught with dangers. Staff often find it de-motivating and shallow; the statistical complexity and capriciousness of rankings often make them difficult to predict; and gaming the system to achieve rankings success may even divert leadership energy and resources from real strategy. And yet......nearly all universities use rankings to varying degrees in their global positioning.

Our seminar assembles an experienced array of speakers to help us grapple with these strategic tensions.

Topics and questions to be traversed include:

  • what actions are needed to embrace rankings within universities management and leadership systems in a helpful and proportionate way?
  • how should institutions' stakeholders expectations be managed with regard to rankings?
  • what are some examples of good practice where institutions integrate their rankings tactics into their wider and real academic strategy?
  • and what is the role of leadership in successful strategic positioning in a world where rankings loom large?

These and other topics will be debated over the course of the seminar. It promises to be a lively and intellectually engaging event, relevant to anyone involved in strategic institutional leadership.

We look forward to welcoming you to Groningen.

HUMANE - Message from the Chairman to all members

Dear HUMANE Members,

I would like to wish you all a belated Happy New Year!

Changes to HUMANE in 2016

2016 will be a very important year of change for HUMANE. I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on the developments in the HUMANE 2.0 transformation process. HUMANE 2.0 is the name we have given to the process that we started at the Round Table last year in Berlin - it is the renewal of HUMANE to a more dynamic association both at the level of it’s core membership and to be able to offer professional support to the wider institution through expanding our activities. I am attaching the paper presented at the Round Table for your information.

The Round Table agreed that the Executive Committee could go ahead with the process and the key points to bring you up to date are:

- HUMANE has had two very positive meetings with our Winter School partner, EFMD, about deeper collaboration to offer joint activities in the form of professional training and seminars. We hope to announce our first joint seminar to take place in the autumn of this year shortly.
- HUMANE is also looking into ways of offering new member-only services. We would like to offer activities uniquely for our core members, not open to anybody else.
- HUMANE will look for a new part-time Associate Director to drive these new activities forward.

HUMANE Associate Director - Call for applications

The new Associate Director would take over the responsibilities of the Network Manager from July 1st. He/She would also be in charge of the development of the new services and activities. Today we are launching the recruitment process by sending the announcement to you, our HUMANE members, and distributed among our partnership organisations.  The announcement can be downloaded with this link: Associate Director - please feel free to circulate this to any colleagues that may be interested. As we need the successful candidate to be in place as soon as possible to enable a smooth transition, the closing date for applications is 29 February.

Changes in the Executive Committee

Our Colleague Paul Jankowitsch from the Technische Universtität Wien has stepped down due to his new position as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the RESAVER Consortium. We are delighted to welcome our friend and colleague Kanzler Jens Apitz from Universität Constant who has taken over this position with the strong support from the members of his constituency. We thank Paul for his excellent work and warmly welcome Jens to the Executive Committee.

Events in Spring 2016

The next HUMANE Seminar will be organized together with the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice Italy from April 22 to 23. The theme The Shape of Things to Come: System and institutional responses to higher education marketisation reflects the major changes European Universities face when entering the global markets. We have excellent set of speakers sharing their experience - both from our member universities, offshore activities and from private sector partners. This Seminar is selling very well. Please check out the website for more information - here.

Dates and topic for our Annual Conference have also been set. The University of Groningen will host the Conference from June 17 to 18. The conference preparations are already on their way. In Groningen we will also continue our discussion in detail how the HUMANE 2.0 transformation proceeds.  In case you want to contribute to the programme or suggest speakers, do not hesitate to contact our Network Manager Han Borg (networkmanager@humane.eu). Details about the Annual Conference can be found here.

Winter School with EFMD

The 2016 EFMD-HUMANE Winter School will take place in a few weeks time. We received 65 applications this years edition which is remarkable - competition for the places is growing every year. The Winter School will again be chaired by HUMANE’s Phil Harvey and directed by EFMD’s Nadine Burquel. The cooperation with EFMD developed with the Winter School is really excellent and we hope to be launching other events and activities with them as we take HUMANE 2.0 forward.

The Executive Committee would welcome all your comments and advice about the continuing HUMANE 2.0 development. Please do not hesitate to contact me about any of the points raised here (chairman@humane.eu).

Best wishes,

Esa Hämäläinen

HUMANE Seminar: The Shape of Things to Come: System and institutional responses to higher education marketisation - Ca' Foscari University of Venice Friday 22 to Saturday 23 April, 2016

What are the drivers of higher education demand over the next 10 years?
What are some of the big, observable trends in higher education branding and marketing strategy?
What are the implications of these trends for the professional administration of universities?

Demographic changes, shifts in the global economy, trade patterns, and shifts in inbound and outbound student flows linked to growing global competition are re-shaping the global higher education landscape.

By 2020 just four countries -- India, China, the US and Indonesia – will account for over half of the world’s 18–22 population; and a further quarter will come from Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Philippines, Mexico, Egypt and Vietnam.  Opportunities for global engagement in higher education are not limited to internationally mobile students.  Transnational education and collaborative research partnerships are also experiencing exponential growth.

The practical implications of these powerful trends and changes emanating from the globalisation of higher education for system-level and institutional marketing strategy are immense.

Policy makers in most developed and developing countries shape their national higher education policies with an eye to global higher education rankings.  Their quality assurance regimes are also often focussed on assuring foreign governments of the quality and prestige of national higher education systems.

At the institutional level, universities are allocating more resources than ever before to marketing and branding strategy, and the delivery of these strategies.

This in turn has spawned new leadership positions within universities such as Chief Marketing Officers and Chief Digital Officers.  And online and digital marketing and recruitment resources are high priority investments for most universities.

In short, effective strategic planning in universities is no longer possible without a parallel focus on unified brand messaging to help recruit, retain and build loyalty among students, staff, alumni, donors and other stakeholders.

Our seminar will grapple with all of these issues bringing together an impressive range of system-level, institutional and external-to-higher education speakers to help us navigate the shape of things to come!

Manel Jiménez Morales - Communications and Marketing at the Vice-Rector’s Office, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (ES)
