As the world has become increasingly complex and turbulent over recent decades, European higher education has, compared with many other sectors, fared remarkably well.

But as the combined mega trends of Europe’s demographic crisis, the shift eastwards of political and economic power, and the advent of artificial intelligence gather momentum, is this apparent stability sustainable?

Can higher education keep dodging the bullets and retain relatively predictable funding compared with others, based on a business model that has remained largely unchanged for 70 years?

How rapid and disruptive will the resulting changes be? And what are the consequences of these changes for European higher education, for individual institutions and the role of senior finance professionals?

These are just some of the questions which the senior finance professionals pathways programme will address. Click here to view the final programme. It is designed to be a highly interactive, professional and personal development experience, led by an impressive array of contributors.

Register here to secure your place. This programme would be ideal for a range of senior finance professional including CFOs, FDs, Planning Directors, Chief Accountants, Financial Controllers and senior management and project accountants. As ever, Heads of Administration HUMANE members are also welcome to join the programme.

HUMANE Autumn Seminar, Managing the university campus, Trinity College Dublin, November 9-10, 2017

Managing the university campus: current challenges and future opportunities

HUMANE Autumn Seminar, Trinity College Dublin

November 9-10, 2017

As Europe’s universities have grown in scale over the past 30 years, the effective management of space has become a constant and complex challenge for university managers. The demand for new and better space to accommodate innovative teaching, research and team-work, often with industry and business partners, is as acute as the challenge of managing older and less well designed space more efficiently. This, combined with the need to re-think space and its management as a critical component of the student and staff experience, makes the challenge even more complex if only because it requires an integrated and negotiated approach to the management of the campus.

Our Autumn seminar aims to deal with these knotty problems in a practical and innovative way, with contributions from a range of speakers from Ireland, Norway, the UK and other member countries, as well as representatives from other industry sectors who will share their insights, successes and challenges in managing the contemporary university campus. Contributions from professionals working in estates and facilities, IT, benchmarking, organisational development and change management, and the student and staff experience promise to make this seminar a great learning and networking experience for our members and their senior staff.

Our venue will be the historic campus of Trinity College Dublin. Our host institution and HUMANE look forward to welcoming you to Dublin in the Autumn.

Please note: The HUMANE survey in December 2016 found that many members preferred events to be held over Thursday-Friday rather than Friday-Saturday. As a result, the Autumn Seminar will take place from lunch time Thursday, 9 November and will close with lunch on Friday, 10 November.

Full information, latest updates, the draft schedule plus who can attend can be found on the seminar webpage.

HUMANE-EFMD Winter School for Senior Managers

HUMANE-EFMD Winter School for Senior Managers

2018 Edition, Barcelona, 18-23 March 2018

Now Open for Applications

We are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Winter School. Please use this link.

Throughout Europe, and despite apparent differences between national systems, senior managers in higher education have to deal with very similar issues. The increasing impact and importance of international strategy is a case in point. The top managers of tomorrow will be those who understand the global environment and can capitalise on opportunities for development.

Aims

The HUMANE-EFMD Winter School develops the leadership potential of talented Senior Managers by making them fully aware of the concepts and practices of strategic management in a European context, and the importance of integrating academic support, finances, human resources, governance, leadership and communication strategy in the delivery of university strategy.

Format

The programme is highly intensive, including plenary sessions and practical work in small groups. Participants are encouraged to discuss the situation of their own institutions. The working language is English, but presenters are well used to dealing with various levels of language proficiency.

Subject

The Winter School focuses on leadership and management skills in the context of the “big picture” of global higher education. The programme is equally sensitive to the uniqueness of the practice of management in the university setting. This is not just “yet another” management course.

Participants will gain experience in making informed choices in decision-making processes. The Winter School uses the experience of HUMANE and EFMD members to give unique first-hand insight into general problems. The geographical and cultural spread of our members ensure that this discussion is not system-specific.

Applicants

The Winter School is designed for talented fast-rising managers of administration or services, some of who might become heads of administration. The typical candidate will be someone who has the potential to become an influential senior manager and/or head of administration in the future but who at this moment may not be a deputy or senior colleague. Candidates may be an expert or a specialist with the potential to broaden responsibility and move in due course to a senior management position. They are nominated by their own heads of administration, and selected by the School Steering Committee.

Application criteria

Applicants must during the application process provide:

  • A one page statement describing their qualifications and why they are interested in this Winter School
  • A one (or maximum two) page curriculum vitae
  • A letter of support from their head of administration

The website for applications is now open. The number of participants is limited to 40. Applicants will know whether their application has been successful or not in the beginning of December 2017.

Funding Opportunities

Universities and Business Schools may also wish to explore travel funding opportunities from the EU for training activities (for more information, please check the Erasmus + Programme guide)

Application Deadline

Applications can be made until 31 October 2017.

Programme

The programme will be available shortly on the website.

Redefining university leadership in a volatile world

As previously announced in our Winter and Spring Newsletters, HUMANE’s 20th anniversary conference – our association’s 100th event – is being held at the Collège de France in Paris’ Latin Quarter.

The theme of the conference – redefining university leadership in a volatile world – is both topical and important. The central premise is that increased volatility in universities’ operating environment is challenging the way we think about and practice leadership. Universities’ response to genuine crisis provides a fascinating way of analysing these challenges.

We have assembled an outstanding array of speakers to make this a both stimulating and memorable 20th Anniversary Conference.

A diverse and select range of speakers include:

Prof. Thierry Coulhon, President, Paris Sciences et Lettres – Research University (FR)
- Leading universities in turbulent times

Prof. Pierre Rosanvallon, the famous French intellectual and historian, and Named Professor at the Collège de France (FR)
- Good governance in higher education (presented in French with simultaneous translation available)

Prof. Baroness Alison Wolf, Sir Roy Griffiths Professor of Public Sector Management, King’s College London (UK)
- Global higher education and bureaucratised universities: why does one produce the other?

Prof. Patrick Lagadec, international consultant in the field of crisis intelligence and leadership (FR)
- Crisis leadership in a chaotic world: navigating the unknown

Dr. Cécile Wendling, Head of Foresight, AXA and visiting researcher at Science Po (FR)
- Megatrends and disruptions for institutional leaders: lessons from the insurance sector

Mr Stuart Bell, Chief Executive of Oxford Health Foundation Trust (UK)
- From crisis to crisis: leadership in the health service

Ms Emily Hough, Editor in Chief of the Crisis Response Journal (UK)
- Reputations on the line: Leadership, empowerment and trust in crisis communications

Dr. Ann Fust, Executive Director, Swedish Research Council (SE)
- Leaning into the wind: lessons learned from leading in an environment of turbulence and uncertainty.

Dr. Edward Deverell, Crismart at the Swedish Defence University (SE)
- Lessons for everyday leadership from crisis research

Ms. Alviina Alametsä, Masters degree student at the University of Helsinki and film maker, specialising in conflict and peace making (FI)
- Resilience in crisis - how to build security, empathy and strong communities?

Full details can be found on the Conference webpage.

The social programme will include the 20th Anniversary HUMANE dinner on a Seine barge on Friday evening and an informal garden party with a jazz ensemble on the Satruday evening. The full programme and practical information about the venue and hotels will be available shortly, but register now by clicking here to secure your place. The Register here to secure your place.
