The challenge of change: changing models and methods for the management of transformational change in contemporary higher education

Whether seeking gains in institutional efficiency, responding to shifts in policy and financing, or improving competitive academic advantage, many European universities are initiating strategic transformation programmes.

But the research evidence over the past 20 or more years consistently shows that about 70 per cent of all transformation programmes in all sectors fail to meet their objectives.

The key ingredients of strategic change in universities are not in dispute: effective leadership; a clear vision for a future operating model; and an aligned institutional culture. But the method to achieve sustainable change is much less clear, with institutions having invested in various sophisticated change management methods and models to guide their transformation programmes.

Our seminar aims to explore and share experiences of these developments, covering themes that include:

• evidence of what’s worked, what’s failed and what’s worth trying again
• convergence and divergence of methods and approaches in the public and private sectors
• using expert external and internal consultants to support transformation programmes, and
• transformation sponsorship, leadership and followership.

With inputs from a range of institutions as well as those with experience of other sectors, our seminar presents a unique opportunity to share experience and network with an international audience of HE professionals grappling with how best to manage the ‘challenge of change’.

HUMANE AUTUMN STUDY VISIT

HUMANE and Aalto University are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for HUMANE’s autumn study visit: developments in innovation leadership at Aalto University.

Innovation and innovation management has been at the core of Aalto University’s academic strategy from its beginnings.

Founded in 2010, Aalto was given a national mission to strengthen the innovation capacity of Finland through first-class research, art and education.

It styles itself as a place where "science and art meet technology and business”.

How does an institution with such a mission, and mandate, go about the business of managing innovation? In particular, how is it managing issues such as:

• weaving innovation into the fabric of the University’s wider strategy,
• the balance of emphasis between conventional research excellence and innovation
• stimulating collaboration with partners inside and outside of HE
• IP management, protection, commercialisation and the distribution of benefits, and
• the management of risk.

Commencing with a convivial dinner on the evening before the study visit, the programme takes place over two days and has been shaped around three half day sessions:

• the management and internal regulation of the innovation process at Aalto,
• the evolution and future development of the Aalto innovation ecosystem, and
• the role of students in Aalto’s approach to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Participants will have plenty of opportunity to engage informally with Aalto staff and, as with all of our events, the learning will be two-way, with participants encouraged to share their institutional experiences with our hosts, as well as other participants.

SHANGHAI TRANSNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS SCHOOL

HUMANE and our strategic partner EFMD, are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the Shanghai Transnational Partnerships School. Developed in collaboration with one of China’s most prestigious and internationally active universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, our School provides senior and middle managers with a unique international learning experience. Participants will gain insight into the spectrum of strategic partnerships operating in some of China’s most internationally focussed universities in Shanghai and nearby to China's most international metropolis.

The programme provides an opportunity to visit and discuss strategies with senior leaders of international partnerships in institutions such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Tongji University, South Eastern University and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

You will learn about the genesis of these institutions’ approaches to international partnership, key strategic partnerships currently in place, the big challenges they face in making the most of investments in these partnerships, as well as the future opportunities they want to exploit in pursuing the next stage of their academic strategy. You will also be exposed to other senior experts from outside higher education with deep experience of joint ventures with Chinese organisations.

The programme will be intensive to make the best use of limited time, but it will also be conducted informally with an emphasis on discussion and engagement with institutional hosts, as well as peer learning among a multi-national participant audience. Directors of operations/administration/finance; Directors of International Offices, External Relations, Institutional Planning & Strategy, Strategic Partnerships or comparable roles, as well as managers with responsibility for delivering joint venture projects will all benefit from attending this programme.
